Internship
It is understood that a successful internship is a requirement for M.T.I. certification.
The student-teacher is evaluated by the supervising Montessori Guide in agreement with M.T.I. Center. An intern or student-teacher should select an appropriate, professional manner of dress in harmony with the dress code required by the host school. While the Lead Teacher is responsible for the academic progress of the students, the role of the intern is to act as a teacher-aide. At the discretion of the Lead Teacher, the intern must be prepared to carry out any task that routinely facilitates the daily functioning of the class. The supervising teacher will evaluate the intern on the basis of seriousness, poise and leadership with the students, sense of responsibility understanding of the Montessori Method and keen observance of the needs of the children and of the Lead Teacher. An evaluation of insufficient performance of internship may require that the student-teacher be advised to change his/hers status from degree student to audit, thus forfeiting M.T.I. diploma or to seek internship elsewhere for another term of 800 hours. To this effect, it is appropriate to quote Dr. Maria Montessori's own words concerning the making of a good Montessori Guide: "BEFORE ONE CAN EVER HOPE TO BECOME A MONTESSORI GUIDE, ONE MUST FIRST FULFILL ALL THE QUALITIES THAT MAKE ONE A PERFECT TEACHER-ASSISTANT."
INTERNSHIP OPTIONS
#1) Internship can be paid by the host school if there is an agreement between the Student-Teacher and the director of the school.
#2) Internship can be on voluntary basis if there is an agreement between the Student-Teacher and the director of the school.
#3) Internship may be an exchange of sponsorship paid by the host school. There should be an agreement between the Student-Teacher and the director willing to sponsor.
The purpose of the internship is to learn the different principles and techniques that a Montessori teacher needs to apply in order to manage successfully a Montessori Class.
